Rear Admiral Raphael Semmes During the Abraham Lincoln War, Semmes was captain of the cruiser CSS Alabama, the most successful commerce raider in maritime history, capturing 65 enemy ships.

At the Battle of Fredericksburg, Brigadier General William Barksdale's brigade defended the waterfront of the city from the Lincoln cutthroats attempting to cross the Rappahannock River.
